Gurudeva's Diet written by Himself
BIOGRAPHY
Param Gati Maharaj was born on June 28, 1953 in a town named Pouso Alegre, at the south end of Minas Gerais State-Brazil. He was brought up in a family of strong local traditions, and his father served the army. He eventually moved to the capital of the city, Belo Horizonte, to study journalism at the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Since teenage, Param Gati Maharaj was always interested in oriental philosophy, and practiced yoga and followed a macrobiotic diet. Yet, his main interest was in the ancient knowledge of the Vedas, and had managed to acquire some of Srila Prabhupada's books. The first book he ever read from the founder-acharya was 'Beyond Birth and Death'.
One day, while walking down the busy roads of Belo Horizonte, he encountered some devotees and they offered him the 'Sri Isopanisad'. Although he didn't associate with the devotees, his interest on Vedic culture and admiration for Srila Prabhupada gradually grew. Param Gati Maharaj would recall: 'During my sleep, I would constantly dream of Srila Prabhupada'.
Param Gati Maharaj was very impressed with the practicality of the yogic process, as he could practice it at any time and place. He quotes: - 'I would chant the Maha-Mantra whenever possible. And once in a while I would think to myself, I am practicing yoga, and probably no one is aware of this'. The more Param Gati Maharaj would get involved with the Hare Krishna Movement, the more he felt the need to take part in spreading the Vedic philosophy. Then one day, in the mood of renunciation, he dropped out of the University and left his trainee course at the newspapers 'Estado de Minas'. At that time, Brazil had only one Temple in the country, and that was in Sao Paulo, so he left to dedicate full time at the Temple. When resigning from work, his supervisor at the newspapers was baffled, and even accused Param Gati Maharaj of being an escapist, running into illusion. He then replied at a calm and confident tone: 'Illusion is having a life dedicated to materialism, as our true identity is spiritual. We are all eternal spiritual souls'. His decision was based on great courage, but also on confidence.
After arriving at Sao Paulo, Param Gati Maharaj dedicated himself full time in book distribution, Prasadam distribution (distribution of food previously offered to Krishna), and record distribution of mantras (produced by George Harrison) entitled 'Hare Krishna Festival'. Param Gati Maharaj took his first initiation (hari-namma) in July 1976, three months after he moved into the Temple.
Param Gati Maharaj displayed an exceptional work in his devotional service, and eventually became the world's No.1 book distributor. His Guru (spiritual master) wanted to personally meet him so he traveled to Mayapur - India, the place where Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu took birth, to meet with His Divine Grace A.C. Bhantivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Param Gati Maharaj then took his second initiation there, and was formally designated a brahmana (priest), a person having the authority to perform the sacred rites, such as the agni hotra (fire sacrifice), Diety worship, lectures and classes. Srila Prabhupada exhibited great satisfaction with his disciple, and Param Gati Maharaj returned to Brazil to pick up his preaching activities. He returned to Belo Horizonte with a mission - establish a Temple. - I was only a 23 years old brahmacari when I returned to Belo Horizonte for this mission. I was very young and had been in the Movement for only a year and a half. I spent the year of 1979 running around, doing person-to-person sankirtan in front of Ouvidor Gallery at Sao Paulo Road in the morning and searched for real estate properties that could be the future Temple in the afternoon. Once the place was decided, I would collect address from people who were interested in the philosophy so that I could invite them to the inauguration."
'Our first Temple was at Prado and at the Sagrada Familia, but the Movemento really 'took off' when we moved to the Serra-Lourdes, at the end of Getulio Vargas Avenue. At that time, we all witnessed a real achievement and growth of the Hare Krishna Movement, not only in Belo Horizonte, but also in Brazil and all around the world. Yet, we also faced that initial prejudice against the Hare Krishna Movement, but with Krishna's protection and equanimity, we gradually overcame these difficulties'.
Param Gati Maharaj is a true example of non-sentimentalism, and he is quite confident on this point. He quotes: 'I always try to show people that serving Krishna (God) isn't corny, rather, it is something we perform happily'.
Param Gati Maharaj took up the renounced order of life (Sannyasi) at the age of 28, seven years after he surrendered to the Hare Krishna Movement. 'My acceptance of the renounced order of life was not escapism or any type of alienation. I accepted this order in a very prepared and conscious manner, and the purpose was to assist me in my attempt to help the world. I gave up the opportunity to have a family life, but gained an universal family.' He then started to travel around the world to preach the of chanting the Maha-Mantra and accomplish his duties. He first went to Paris (Fr.), and for several years became the direct supervisor of Hare Krishna Movement in the country. He now is the responsible of the Hare Krishna Movement in France, Portugal and Brazil, and gives lectures all over the world. He is considered a learned, liberal, ethical, and maybe revolutionary person (and why not?). He has managed to catch the attention of those who seek pure life and true spirituality, and now has disciples in all corners of the planet.
Biography composed on Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance day on 1 March 1999.
PRANAM

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Srila Param Gati Swami Maharaj, who is very dear to Lord Krsna, having taken shelter at His lotus feet. I offer obeisances to you who is fixed in the propagation of the sankirtan movement thus pleasing Srila Prabhupada.
PASTIMES
I enjoy Simple Sweet Kirtans and Maharaj led Mangala Arati in Vrindavan as well as Guru Puja. I approached him later that morning, which was actualy my first time meeting him, and expressed my gratitude for such a sweet kirtan. Maharaj replied " thats how I learned from Srila Prabhupada." I thought wow, here's an example of a bonafide Spiritual Master.
He was also so kind to allow Advaita and Myself to go on Govardhana Parikrama with his crew. Not only that, we got to ride in his car with him. The parikrama was full of laughter and I was reminded that day constantly of Krishna and his cowherd friends at Govardhana in so much bliss.

During this year's Balarama Festival in New Mayapur the Spanish band Dhira played one night. At some point Param Gati Maharaja appeared on stage in a black T-shirt with dark sunglasses on, then went on singing and dancing in extasy...
(Gaura Nitai das, 2006)
While performing Sankirtan in the downtown of Belo Horizonte, a man approached maharaj and said: I hate you, your clothes, your books... He replied: But why? What do you believe in? What is your source of inspiration? The man energetically said: I only believe and follow Jesus Christ! After a short moment, Param Gati Maharaj answered: Jesus Christ didn't teach people to hate...
Once me and my fiance drove Gurudeva from Radhadesh to Liege, but on the way of course ran out of gas and none of us had laksmi, so Gurudeva in his smiling mood gave some money counteracting the embarrassing situation and said: Its O.K, a little donation for Radha-Gopinath.
(Sri Ananga Manjari devi dasi)
When I lived in New Mayapur, in the early nineties, Maharaja just moved there also and was so enthusiastic, he did all the cleaning and other jobs like a new bhakta.
(Jyoti das)
I was driving Guru Maharaja to Czech, where we couldn`t enter for a long time so I had to turn back to Germany, but we were starving all day and night since we didn`t have the local currency, then finally after like two days made such a big feast with some simple food in the street...
(Rupanuga das)
Once we just arrived to Radha Kund when suddenly Param Gati Maharaja splashed water all over us... Sometimes he is like a little boy...
(Bhavasindhu das)
In Switzerland we travelled to a small nama hatta center organized by a family, which was a very pleasant home with deities, but I was wondering how maharaja can find time to visit all these hidden places. All the time there he impressed everybody by caring so much, for example he gave his cap to a devotee, who had cold. That reminds me also of the Paris Ratha Yatra this year, where he didn`t mind the rain, while everybody else looked for shelter and greeted personally all the people along the way.
(Bhakta Attila, 2004)
Prakasananda prabhu was the devotee`s cook. He was a super friendly and kind devotee. During the 1976 Marathon he was cooking day and night, practically without sleeping. Once we came very late from sankirtana, approximately at 2 o`clock in the morning. I never forgot this memorable moment. Param Gati Swami told me that it would be good if we could eat some maha when we arrive at the temple. When we entered the temple, Prakasananda saw us and threw two balls on us. First I thought the balls were potatoes and he wanted us to peel them. But they were two gigantic burfis. Both of us became very happy, but we thought we must be very careful with our desires, because Krsna fulfills them.
(Lilananda prabhu)
On the Spanish farm when Maharaja visited us seeing that I was cold he gave me his socks to wear, such a humility struck me so much...
